btw, I've been separated from gear before but since I'm especially aware to hold on to the boom, it's much less likely to happen now. But must admit coming off the back a few times when botching a jibe and the board shoots off on the foil downwind. On a windy day, that would be trouble.
Yes in that case I think he was on a 8.0 foil glide and a foilx (probably infinity 76 but not sure). I was on an 8.0 and a fin. On a previous day I was on a 5.6 and foiling and most people had switched to fins because of how gusty it was with some decent wind swell, even in the somewhat protected area (not scenic). He had dropped the foil board and used the FG for fin. He did the same thing this weekend after rescued, just went finning with that sail.
Unless it was a 7.0, but I'm doubting it as we were planing at about the same time (unless it really is almost like a 7.5).
Really think he got yanked off the back and the chop/swell was making it a struggle to swim back. There may have been a slight current too, not sure. But the kit got blown at least a tenth or two tenths of a mile from him, which can be a bear to swim.

Sounds like it was going faster downwind than he was unless it had floated into a calmer area. Happened to me a couple of times. You can swim after it but it's still pulling away from you. For those that don't, consider wearing a float/impact vest. That little extra float is handy when the water isn't flat. Glad it was only an adventure and not something worse.
I'm feeling a little called out in this thread. Weathercat takes a litterbox load on the forecast and nobody bats an eye. Some dog just wants to play and everybody loses their mind.
Whoa. Luckily most of the beaches here are deep further out and away from dogs. We just have to worry about sharks.
Reminds me of this:
What happens in a black hole stays in a black hole.
Speaking of sharks - this nutso story on seabreeze yesterday (that you'd commented on): https://www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Windsurfing/General/Kanaha-Maui-Talk-Story
