Wow! Two days of NW wind, and on a weekend! I plan to sail Van Pugh.
I've sailed Van Pugh & Old Federal with this wind direction and in my opinion, Van Pugh is way better for windsurfing. The main advantage of Old Federal is open area for launching kites, but with the wide beach, Van Pugh may be better for both.
Old Federal has less chop but in this weekend's forecast winds, most of us are looking for chop/swell. I'm with Barrett, Van Pugh it is. I'd take Sunrise over Old Federal, too. Edit: But if you don't feel comfortable at Van Pugh, that's okay. It can be nasty at times and as a sideshore launch, doesn't offer much of a plan B as you'll end up with a long walk if you get blown downwind.
Kiters are welcome to VP but be aware of where the windsurfers launch and stay clear unless coming in, etc.. i.e. not a great place to blow a jump and have your lines stretched out where people can't get by.

Sounds so welcoming, has a kiter done that? I would think if a kiter had his lines in the water that close to shore, he's probably in trouble. Besides, nobody is going to jump that close to shore or get their kites anywhere near that rock shoreline. Also, I've heard the complaints about Old Fed and the islands, but it's a nice beach and a great launch on a NW, and definitely has a much easier "plan B" if blown downwind.

Yep. During Matthew when the water was a lot higher. I had just launched and was trying to pinch my way off the beach and away from the rocks - it was pretty NW. He jumped right by the end of the point - kiters' equivalent to the hero jibe - and blew his landing. It was like the old days of Rodanthe when you had to dodge the gill nets. I was able to pinch just upwind. He pretty much figured out what he'd done and kept the rest of his jumps further out.
Didn't mean to sound hostile - guys like you, Gene, Roger, etc. get it which is why it's never been mentioned before. Somebody new to town and who doesn't windsurf might not be aware of what a PITA it is to get out of the cove on a small board.

Now, back to the other thread.

Old Fed for me, most likely Sunday a.m.
