I just returned from a week in Erie, PA visiting my Dad. Four out of seven days were good for windsurfing, and I got out on two of them. Yesterday was the best. WSW wind of 20 knots created surprisingly large waves parallel to shore. With almost no shore break, it was easy to launch & great fun sailing in the waves. After a cold winter the water temp. has warmed to 73F, so no wetsuit was needed, but sailors are required to wear a PFD.

State law?
Sounds like sailing with Spanx on. Or, so a "friend of mine" says.
I have to admit, that after nearly 20 years of windsurfing, I still don't know why windsurfers are so allergic to PFDs. Can someone enlighten me.
Noticed the kites in the background of Barrett's photos. We too had kites flying on Saturday. Yes - my homemade sled kite, which I sewed myself. Made it from the ancient dangerous C-kite Gene gave me. (Ok, I started small, but I'm having to teach myself how to sew.)
What happens in a black hole stays in a black hole.
Randy, if you make it up to Sunset Beach in Erie, your kite will make a nice addition.
In answer to William's question, the Erie windsurfers told me that a PFD is required. I presume it's a State requirement, since Presque Isle is a PA State Park. The PFD rule seems to mainly apply in the summer when the beaches are guarded.
