Road Trip Cape San Blas

Ok, I know I have tried this before and it bombed. Well, here goes again. I used to really enjoy our old road trips to go sailing and Cape San Blas is still one of my favorite places.

Cape San Blas has camping, motels, or condo rentals. Flat water bay side sailing or sail the ocean.

Why don't we make a road trip out of it in March.

Is there any interest at all?

If you leave Atlanta early you can be there by noon.

Spring Break, that is, first week of April is best for us. I wonder how the crowds will be during that time...

I don't think crows are an issue. I have never found that place crowded. Not spring or summer.

Definite interest here, but I have races for the next three weekends. IMAGE(<a href="http://s3.amazonaws.com/advrider/ricky.gif" rel="nofollow">http://s3.amazonaws.com/advrider/ricky.gif</a>) April would work for me.

Can you sail directly from any of the campsites at Cape San Blas?

Well that's not exactly true. Chris P and I have been discussing primitive camping on the bay side. We would have to trasport all our stuff out over the water to get to the camp site but then, yes, you could sail directly from your campsite. Also, I am not sure if the Indian Pass campground is still open or not, I think that it is, and at that location you can camp right on the water and sail our from your campsite.

Actually you can sail from the camp site if you sail gulf side. I have stayed there multiple times and got camp sites close to the boardwalk leading to the beach. I left my gear rigged up at the camp site and just carried it to the beach when the wind came up. It is a bit of a walk though ~ 150 yards maybe. The other option of course is to drive the 1 mile back to the boat launch area where you can sail either the gulf or the bay. Depending on the wind direction one or the other will work best.

I have done primitive camping along the bay side from a kayak and it was fun. I put water/tent/etc in the kayak and towed a windsurfing rig behind me a few miles down the peninsula until we found a decent beach and sailed during the day to avoid the horsefly attack. Hopefully it is too early in the year for the horseflies/no see ums that come out.

The spring should offer us not only a very low population of flying bugs but also most probably good wind and warm but not hot temperatures and good sleeping temperatures.

You are correct about the camping. From the state park campground Cape San Blas goes another 10 miles to the north. This leaves many places to camp. The view would be looking over the bay at Port St. Joe. This location would be bay side and not subject to waves. I know for a fact that the water is knee to waist deep because I have been along this area before. In fact, I have traveled by water all the way to the north end hook of Cape San Blas.

This bay side is made up of a combination of grass and sandy beaches with pine tree and palm tree groves. It is really quite pretty. In fact, when I was looking at it I couldn't believe that there was this much beach front undeveloped land left in Florida.

In this particular area it is you and nature and that's about it.

We need to establish a couple of things.

Is the campground at Indian Pass still open??

The campground at St. Joe Park is usually full with advance reservations on weekends. But you never know. http://www.floridastateparks.org/stjoseph/

When will temperatures at Cape San Blas be 65-70 lows and 80's highs.

Set a date - probably early April or late March.

When we do these road trips we cannot guarantee wind becuase we have to make plans so far in advance for everyone to come. However, I have never done this before where I couldn't at least putt around on my 8.0 as well as swim, snorkel, bike ride etc.

I'm interested in the Cape San Blas trip as well, depending on the dates. I have two suggestions. The last weekend of March (3-28 to 4-1), returning to Atlanta on Sunday, or the first weekend of April (Easter weekend).

Easter weekend will interfer with the plans of too many people

I propose we set a date of the weekend of March 31st and April 1st

Easter will be Sunday April 8th.

So everyone chime in if this date is good.

To reserve a camp site in the main camping area of St Joe St. Park call Fla. Reservations at 800-326-3521 and to make last minute reservations on 24 hr notice call the park directly at 850-227-1327

Guess what? Indian Pass Campground is open and operating.

Campsites are on the water. This campground is about 4 miles to St. Joe Park.

I have camped here several times.

Sorry, neither date works for me. I have to go to the west coast last week in March. However, its best not to base it on my schedule, as it changes frequently.
