Our surfing roots - The Eddie at Waimea

I was remiss in not mentioning the Eddie surf contest that happend last Sunday. It was an all day event with giant waves.

The contest honors Eddie Aikau who was a lifeguard at Wiamea. Eddie lost his life going for help on his surfboard after the Hokulea capsized as it began its voyage to Tahiti in 1978. I was living in Hawaii at the time and remember it well. This event continues the cultural celebration of the Hawaiians and surfing.

The swell has been big lately over there. Jason Polakow got wrecked at Jaws and there has been at least one unfortunate tragedy.
