Olympic Sailing Slime

NPR Story on the Olympic sailing venue and algae bloom. Includes comments from Ben Barger, US Mens Olympic windsurfer. Wonder if weed fins are allowed?

I haven't seen the weed fin that would cut through that muck. What's even more bothersome is the sewage that caused the bloom. Wouldn't want to fall in that 'stuff'.

I used to have a condo near Destin and sailed off the beach on the Hobie many times. That same thing would happen down there. The green slime would come up on shore and they used bulldozers to dig on the beach and bury it because it smelled so bad, like rotting fish. Plus once I sailed out in the Hobie and was going at a good clip when I ran aground on the stuff. The Hobie got stuck and I had to get off the boat and swim it out of the muck. That was a job. While I was swimming in it it is full of little fish and bugs jumping around and flying.

I have always made a point of avoiding it after that battle.
