NIMBY... Big fun in June!

From Shell Point:

Notice of Race: NIMBY XIII
June 12 – 14, 2009 – St. George Island, FL

NIMBY XIII, the 13th Annual "Not In My Back Yard" Road Trip Regatta, is scheduled for Friday, June 12 – Sunday, June 14, 2009. It has now been thirteen years since we conceived the concept of taking our show on the road to different venues. I have wanted to do the NIMBY at St. George Island for several years, so this year our windsurfing road show moves to a new venue.

Registration
As usual, NIMBY XIII will be an event not to be missed. This regatta has always been designed to be enjoyable for racers and non-racers alike, with a "No Class" offered along with the traditional racing classes. The registration fee will remain at $20, and will include happy hour, trophies, the pre-supper party, and a wearable item of some sort with the now famous NIMBY logo. A registration form is attached to this e-mail – please print and fill it out, and bring it to the event (there is no early registration).

Motel
The host motel is the venerable Buccaneer Inn at 160 West Gorrie Drive, St. George Island, FL 32328, Phone: 1-800-847-2091. When you arrive on the island, turn left at the lighthouse on the beach at Gorrie Drive, and the motel is on your left. The motel is beachside, has a pool, and is within walking distance to most bars and restaurants. I have blocked off 10 standard rooms at a rate of $105, and 5 efficiencies at a rate of $120 per night. Make sure to specify upstairs or downstairs preference. Their web site is temporarily down, but you can call the motel toll free at 1-800-847-2091 and ask for "Liz" or "April", and mention the "NIMBY Windsurfing Regatta". I strongly suggest that you call immediately to be sure that you have a room reserved for the event, since these rates will only be in effect for the next two weeks.

Schedule
The schedule and format will be similar to past NIMBYs. A yachting trip to fabulous Little St. George Island led by SPSC Power Squadron Commander Don Franklin will kick off the weekend on Friday at noon (meet at the motel). Registration and a welcome happy hour will be held at the motel early Friday evening, followed by Friday evening supper and entertainment in a venue to be announced. Racing will commence on Saturday morning, followed by the traditional party around the pool including complimentary snacks and refreshments on Saturday evening, then dutch-treat supper in a good, moderately priced restaurant Saturday night. Sunday will see more racing, followed by the trophy presentation.

Racing
As far as racing is concerned, the specific locale will be determined by the wind and wave action. If the surf is low and the wind adequate, we'll race off the beach. If the winds and surf are high, we'll be racing on the bay side at a launch to be announced. We plan to run races for longboards and hybrids if there is at least 5 knots of wind, adding Formula boards if we reach 8 knots. The courses will be designed to suit the racers participating, but will probably include some non-standard configurations which will be challenging but fun.

In the tradition of the NIMBY, we will be continuing a long-standing tradition of featuring a long distance race on Saturday. We'll start and sail down St. George Island to a predetermined rendezvous point. Non-sailors will be ferried to the finish line in boats, where we will provide refreshments before the race back. You might want to bring a variety of equipment to be able to adapt to the conditions. Classes will be determined based upon registrants at the event, but we usually have Formula, Longboard, Hybrid, and Sport fleets.

Boat Launching
For those bringing boats, there is no overnight dockage on the island. There is, however, a relatively new boat ramp at the foot of the bridge. You can choose to launch and pull out each night, or anchor overnight in the lee of the island. More information on the yachting aspect will be forthcoming.

. Don't delay -- reserve your room at the Buccaneer Inn now, and thanks for supporting our annual out-of-town road trip-race/party weekend, NIMBY XIII.

This should be a lot of fun, especially for the non-serious racer (or non-racer for that matter– David Wade). SGI is really nice– unspoiled, not that developed and reasonably inexpensive.
