MAUI

Had to pull the trigger on Maui. Life is too short Sept 19th -26th. Only problem is i will be attempting back loops on a starboard tack....Barret you must bring me up to speed on your camera work. I have no idea on mounting, placement, waterproffing etc. We have a one bedroom place in Lahina, driving 25 miles to sail everyday, but who can complain. I will take a sleeping bag on a tile floor to sail in paradise. 3 so far, may have room for one more if interested. Trey

The video that I posted on YouTube was shot with a Go Pro Wide digital camera. The camera has a 170 degree, wide-angle lens. I mounted the camera in two positions (on the nose of my board and on the top of my helmet) and edited the scenes into one video using a Mac computer with iMovie software. The camera also takes a sequence of still photos. To keep the price down, the Go Pro camera has no viewfinder - you must download the photos on your computer or view them on a TV to see the images. There is no way to trigger the camera remotely, you just turn it on when you start sailing, so there is a lot of editing to find the one good shot in the middle of your sailing session.

I've taken my best sailing photos using a hand-held Canon S 80 in a waterproof housing. To take the still photos, I sailed with one hand on the boom and the other holding the camera. The best focal length to use is medium-wide angle (between 28 and 35 mm equivalent). Some of the newer waterproof digital cameras do not require a heavy waterproof case, like the one I use on my Canon. Canon's new waterproof Powershot D-10 is reported to take the best still photos and costs $300 or less. It also takes videos that can be edited and viewed on the built in screen. The camera is so small and light you could hang it around your neck, or use a wrist strap, and grab the camera for shots out on the water.

I look forward to seeing your photos posted, have a great time in Maui!

Trey,
I'm thinking bout your possible open spot. Not sure if the time will work for me yet, but would like to know more about the setup, cost etc.
