Gene’s Hatteras Report – Week 2

Same house, different crew. Bruce Harris and I were joined by Danny & Jenny Johnson, Jerry Farr, Jim Crooks and Eddie Brodeur, (Jim & Eddie should be arriving Sun.) Here’s links to keep up with forecast and wind speeds.

Saturday, it was totally calm in the morning. Then the wind came up some from the SW in the afternoon, although the forecast was for NE. Jerry, who has been saying for the last few months that he knew how to kite, DOES actually know how to kite. I had been out on my 12 meter kite, able to fly it and but not enough wind to successfully work on riding the board, when Jerry arrived. He immediately pumped up his 16 meter and off he went, staying upwind and able to do his turns. I’m impressed, and hope to get some tips from him the rest of the week. I went back out for awhile, but I think I still needed a little more wind. The wind was in the 10+ range but steady, there were some windsurfers out on bigger size sails, but it was marginal. Although this is all new to me, it appears Kiting may be a suitable substitute for Windsurfing when it is just plane-able on the big sails.

The forecast is just so-so for the next few days but as always, subject to change. And as always, I love this place.

Sunday - Nothing.

Monday - Almost Nothing.
Danny and Eddie did some longboarding and Jerry, Bruce and I tried to kite but it really was too lite.

The forecast is for some wind later in the week.

The forecast IS looking a little better the rest of the week.

Thursday – finally some wind!

Danny, Eddy and Joe O’Leary (substitute for Jim Crooks who didn’t make it) sailed the big stuff, Jerry Kited, I worked on my Kiting, and Bruce took a kiting lesson.

Forecast looks good for Friday and Saturday.

I do love this place.

Friday – Kited midday, Windsurfed until dark.

Forecast was for wind, and it blew thru the night. Looked good in the morning, rigged my 5.2, made a few runs and it started to slack off. Bummer, but ….

It was southwest wind and began to build. It was perfect for kiting in the middle of the day. Jerry, Bruce and I Kited for a few hours while Eddie Windsurfed. Danny, Jenny and Joe had already left; I’m not sure which of them is the wind jinx.

Then it really started to build; Eddie was planing on a 4.8. I sailed my 5.2, Bruce was on his 5.5 and Jerry was on a 6.0. It blew hard the rest of the day and we finally got off the water and into the hot tub around sunset. What a great day!

Today (sat) is check out day but the forecast looks good. I hope to sail until around lunch and then make the drive home.

I DO LOVE THIS PLACE!

Final update/Summary

I didn’t sail Saturday morning, it looked like the big sails and I had the 10 hour drive ahead of me.

In total, it was a pretty good trip:
Surfed - 2 days
Kited - 7 days
Sailed 7.5 - 2 days
SAILED 5.2 - 2 DAYS
Did Nothing - 2 days

A lot of the Kite days, I could have sailed the 7.5 sail.

I DO LOVE THAT PLACE!!!!
