Friday, Sept 3

I know it's 3 days away and subject to change, BUT, Weather Underground's forecast says "Windy."

Friday
Partly sunny with a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Windy. Highs in the lower 90s.

Let the fall season begin, it's September.

I was just gonna say the same thing. NWS & iwindsurf agree. Looking at the fronts, I'da thunk Saturday would be the day... guess we'll see.

I have my gear packed. Earl is tracking toward the Outer Banks and hopefully will bring wind to Atlanta this Friday.

My bet is that if it is not enought to windsurf then it will be a good Hobie day.

Re: Friday, Sept 3

The sailors at Van Pugh were - Randy, Marcel, Jeff Knight & Chris Pyron. I had a great time sailing my 8.3 meter & 130 liter board - perfect for the wind conditions from 2:30 - 4:30. The wind was West. so there was a wind shadow near shore, but out on the Lake conditions were good. Gene arrived, then decided to try sailing his kite at Old Federal. He returned to Van Pugh, reporting that conditions were no better at Old Federal and was unable to kite. Chris V. sailed out of the L.L. Sailing Club.

The Lake is still almost full and the water is really warm at 87F.

Re: Friday, Sept 3

I went by Van Pugh to check it out, was some wind but there was some wind shadow. Randy and Marcel were planing, others rigging. Even though I thought I probably could plane on my 7.5, I decided to check out Old Federal and maybe try Kiting. I'm determined to kite Lanier this season, Chris V was at the sailing club but came over to Old Fed to check out how a kite works up close. Chris helped me launch the kite, then he sailed his 9.5 and Equipe from Old Fed and kept an eye on me. The wind was west and blowing straight on shore at the swimming beach, no shadow. It was capping when I was pumping up the kite, and the kite went right up but while I was getting my nerve up to actually ride the board, it slacked off some. I made several attempts to ride the board but didnt have quite enouhg wind, losing ground downwind each try. I decided to quit before I ended up downwind, over my head with not enough wind to fly the kite. It was still fun.

Chris was planing around until he broke his boom, but was able to sail in on the other tack without any problem.

I didnt actually go back by Van Pugh but did call over and got the word that it was pretty good for a while but had slacked off some, about the time I was trying my kite.
