East Wind Today (Fri. Feb. 3)

East wind is often stronger than forecast, especially in the late morning. I'm heading to Van Pugh and hope to sail about 11AM.

Don't be afraid to use the downhaul. It will open up the leech, which you will need if you are going fast and powered up.

Why sails need twist

Here's Antoine Albeau testing race gear. iirc, he's the current windsurfing speed record holder at 49+ knots. You can see at the beginning, before he gets on the water, how floppy his leech is.

And if you are really powered up, use a smaller fin. Good luck and tell us how fast you go.

It was a good one. Sailed 6.2 at Tidwell from 10-12. Surprised how warm it seemed. Looks like it followed our usual Easterly pattern of dying by noon.

Re: East Wind Today (Fri. Feb. 3)

Webguy ..I should have listened to you sooner. Today was a great Tybee sail. I went out on the 6.0 with a pretty full pocket.

It was blowing a steady 20ish with some pops into the mid to high 20's. There was a small wind shadow up near the beach ... Enough to get you on a plane & locked into the straps. About the time you locked in you were through the shadow and taking on about 4 g's.

After an hour or so 'oped' I came in and flattened the sail all the way out. A much better sail from there.

GPS said max 29.8 ... The loose leech helped speed it up a bit. Total distance about 25 miles.

In addition to Bill's smokin' speed run on the coast, and Randy's outing at Tidwell, the sailing was also good this AM at Van Pugh. Jim, William, Marcel & I enjoyed unseasonably warm temps & good wind. From 11AM till Noon I was powered up on a 7.0 m sail and 100 liter board.

Like Barrett and Randy said. And, boy, did it shut off at noon. Classic east.

Bill, glad you got some good runs in. 29+ feels fast and then you wonder how in the heck does someone go almost twice that fast. My wetsuit isn't big enough. There's a funny video for a French sportwear company that would go here if I can find it.
