In an effort to get enough people for Chuck to make the drive from Augusta (we gotta have the Sultan of Stoke, right?) I sent this email to some friends & family. Surely you have some good prospects who would take you up on this:

Learn to Windsurf Day is August 18th at Lake Lanier Sailing Club. This is the perfect chance to learn from real instructors, on gear that is specially made for beginners. LLSC is where we have our regattas and a pretty cool place, (plus it has a refreshing lake right next to it). This introductory lesson costs $25 and IT INCLUDES LUNCH !! ...not a country club lunch mind you- more like burgers & doggies, washed down with a cold beer, but still, it's so much for so little, I'd say you JUST CAN'T AFFORD TO STAY HOME... unless you have to work or play golf or something important like that. But if you want to, this will be really fun and I guarantee every one of you (with the possible exception of Jerry) will be able to windsurf within a couple of hours. Also, Emilio the Kitesurfing guru, will do a demo off the beach if conditions permit
RSVP to me if you can make it.

Learn To Windsurf Clinic

Are there still slots available for this learn to windsurf clinic? I definitely would be interested and possibly my girlfriend.

I'll be there with a beginner board and small rig and my stuff too if we get a good sailing day! I'm trying to get a friend to come out and learn and will let you know if she can make it. I think Inger is coming too. I could sign up Dorian...

I believe the advertised start time is 11:00.

I am bringing 5 adults so far & one of them may bring their 10 y.o. son. There is a post on the LLSC website & that might generate some and a listing on Craig's List under "Classes". Who's compiling these RSVPs? I can't get Gene on the phone. Anybody talked to him??

Sorry everyone, my cell phone was messed up from Sat afternoon until Monday evening, I just figured it out that my cell wasn’t working.

Anyway, we're definitely having a get-together Saturday at the Lake Lanier Sailing Club, cookout, hangout, whatever. It looks like there are some students, including some adults, and we MAY have an actual clinic. We should hopefully have everything nailed down by tomorrow (Tuesday).

Everyone who has expressed an interest, do plan on coming out. It'll be great seeing everyone and hopefully we'll get some wind.

MORE DETAILS SHORTLY.

We have discussed it after you mentioned this Saturday night. It has been years and I have never tried on Lake Lanier. We will see if there are slots available. Dirol

I will be there

I will be there and I will bring the jet skis so that I can rescue anyone who goes out over 2 or 3 miles from shore. There is just no telling what kind of wind we might get so better be prepared.

Thanks, we plan to be there and I definitely will want a slot for the lesson, we will see if Patti will try it. If things change for some reason we will see it on this site and thanks to Carol Moon for mentioning this at the Ski Club function the other night.

Just shy of six.

http://windsurfatlanta.org/modules.php?set_albumName=People-2&id=simonsail&op=modload&name=Foto&file=index&include=view_photo.php

at Calema. And, the equipment wasn't too good back then.

Is 5 years old too young to learn?
Under perfect conditions, with highly specialized gear, and a one-on-one instructor, and in very short sessions repeated many times, SOME 5 yr olds could do something in the direction of actually learning to windsurf. (Someone out there can dig out YouTube clips and other video of David Ezzy's kid and the other Bonaire tiny tykes proving that little kids can do this. I don't deny that; but, again, very special situations and very special conditions and equipment.) Given that we don't have that situation at Lanier, especially in a clinic like this, about the best one can hope for kids that age and size is that they get entertained. That's what Roger Jackson does at the Starboard/Sailworks demo events, like the one ACWA held at Lake Montecello earlier this year. He rides them around as he sits on the front of a big board and holds the sail in place and the kids stand hanging on to the mast and boom. Everybody has a lot of fun.
So, if we get enough adults who have never (or hardly-ever) windsurfed to have the clinic this year, then the kids can come and do whatever they can do with their parents (or other volunteers') help with whatever kid-suitable gear is on hand. But, this clinic is primarily intended for adults and organized instruction will be set up with that in mind.
