That was a wierd bug. I tried several times and could not log in, then tried again, and suddenly I could log in. I thought the special combination of profanties, and hand gestures did the trick, but I guess not.
What happens in a black hole stays in a black hole.
I have no idea what exactly broke or, even worse, when. The solution was to disable something that had been working fine for two years virtually without interruption. Google hasn't turned up any likely suspects.
Oh well. The duct tape is holding for the moment so I'll leave things be as they are.
