Sunday 9/10

It's a bit early yet, but it's looking like some NE wind this coming Sunday.

That's what they're saying in Florida too... Irma is a beast. Waters in Bahamas and west coast of Florida are really warm.

https://www.wunderground.com/cat6/category-5-irma-5th-strongest-atlantic-hurricane-record

Quote:

Hurricane Irma intensified into an extremely dangerous high-end Category 5 storm with top sustained winds of 180 mph on Tuesday morning, putting it among the strongest Atlantic hurricanes ever observed. Irma's winds are the most powerful ever measured in an Atlantic hurricane north of the Caribbean and east of the Gulf of Mexico. Measurements from Hurricane Hunter aircraft found peak winds of close to 180 mph, well above the 157-mph threshold for Category 5 strength. At 11:07 am EDT, a dropsonde in Irma's eye measured a central pressure of 927 millibars, 4 mb lower than the previous pass, so Irma is still strengthening.

Side effect of Irma is that I worry that Harvey victims will be forgotten in the shuffle as resources and attention will be diverted to the "new kid in town".

Well it just got worse. Now there is either no wind in the forecast, or there is so much it is off the charts.

Guess the janitor got into work late, or had clean up a coffee spill before he had time to do the wind forecast for NOAA.

I wonder if they have to override some sort of sanity check to get wind speeds output that high.

This photo contains three hurricanes (2 major) and an 8.0 earthquake. Did someone forget to send in the protection money to Mother Nature? The latest tracks are good for the GA, SC coasts but we are now in the bullseye for rough weather Monday/Tuesday.

I hope to be at Galts aound 12 - 12:30. Where do y'all plan to set-up/launch? To the right of the beach when driving into the parking lot? Or by the jetty?

For E-NE winds, I set up to the right of the beach. -Bill H.

Re: Sunday 9/10

For those not yet out n about who need a little insight - Old Fed this morning on a 5.0 and was waaaaayyyyyyy overpowered in the gusts. Might just be my squinty eyes but I'd swear some of the gusts have been well up in the 30s. Looks unspectacular between the gusts but when they come they're like a freight train hitting your back.

Downsizing to a 4.4 in the hope that'll work out better. Small is cool today!

Stay safe out there peeps.

Re: Sunday 9/10

Galt's sailors were Al, Erik, Phil & myself. Wind was lighter than forecast with lots of lulls and gusts. Sail sizes ranged from about 5.5-6.5.

A couple guys showed up from Florida and kited. They didn't get much time on the water. It looked like the gusts made it difficult. They left their board on the beach. The park attendant has it now.

P.S.A.-The Ranger stopped by to watch and reminded everyone not to sail inside of the "No Boat" buoys near the beach. This will be a moot point soon as the lake level is drawn down.

Vann's roll call: Chris P., Rhett (foiling on a 4.2), Tim J. John, me. Dave D pumped up his kite but decided the wind off the beach would be better at VP and drove around. Wind would cycle (Dave hit an off period). In the strong periods, swell was fun to play on. Took coffee breaks in the lulls until the next cycle appeared upwind.

Re: Sunday 9/10

We had a pretty good turnout and good sailing at Van Pugh, including Barrett, Trey, Eddie B, Alan S, Zeke, Barry Z (windsurfed instead of kited) Langdon, David D (Kited), Jowell (came late and rigged big, but good to see him on the water again), and Brent (who is getting back into the sport,) and maybe more? Sail sizes were 6.0, 7.0 7.5 to giant (jowell.) I sailed my 6.0 and thought it was a really good day. It would blow hard, then drop back, then blow hard, drop back, etc. but it was NOT gusty. David W hung out and Danny Johnson and Jill (evacuees from Brunswick) dropped by, it was very good to see them again.

Good, Fun Day.
