Weekend trip to Jekyll recap June15-18

Friday, we did our training session with perfect 10-12mph winds ideal for students to start familiarizing with the kite and flying techniques. By 6PM, training class ended and like magic the wind speed increased nicely to at about 15mph, providing enough juice to play on the surf breaks (small 1-2 feet whitewater) of high tide.

Saturday: we had marginal 10-13mph all day long, not enough to grant an enjoyable powered session, but perfect to teach students. We had the superb help of kitesurfing instructor extraordinaire Paul Beiderwell who came all the way from Jacksonville to help facilitating the training on this weekend, and that proved to be a great combination of instructors (Paul and Emilio) as stated by students after finishing their training classes. We went and have delicious seafood dinner over St. Simons on the Crab Shack, and headed for a late night (or early morning 3am) sight seeing of the local bar scene on St Simons Island.

Sunday started with a “calm” breeze (calm for lack of a better term, meaning no-wind)… By 2PM started blowing some 9mph, enough to get us out and start rigging up the equipment. Clouds could be seen in the distant west (inland) signaling some activity on the weather. By 4PM the so much expected forecast (south 10-20mph) started to materialize and felt like somebody turned the blower on, and it started to steadily pick-up all the way to 18G20mph for the rest of the day. Leaving early to ATL plans were scratched (if there were any at all), and we enjoyed the late session riding. Wind shifted from the south providing excellent conditions. We ended the day literally kiting till sunset with a donwnwinder of 3 miles from the Days inn all the way to 1 mile north form Blackbear’s restaurant. Donwinders are great for students as they don’t have to concentrate so much in trying to keep staying upwind, and it allows them to relax and enjoy the ride, providing invaluable board riding time (with no walking upwind every 10 min). No need to say, we left the beach late (already dark) aprox 9PM.. and arrive at ATL, safe and sound (thanks GOD!) by 3AM. What a weekend…if I can only have 2 more days to get the rest I need now….

Want to come with LocusWind for a weekend trip to the coast. Call us at 404 509 4229.

We are going again this weekend...maybe we explore FL (Forth Walton) depending on wind.... Space for training available.
