Wave sailing in Oz

Saw a couple of things recently that are a reminder of why wave sailing is a much tougher sell here in the SE US.

First, the longer period swells in a lot of places like Hawaii and Australia make it so much easier since there is so much space between the waves and the water between is cleaner. This video is a nice example (but the music is a bit frenetic)

The other is the level of skill at some spots is insane. Not pros but just the good locals. Here's a photo gallery of a spot near Perth. btw, the date is in dd/mm/yyyy format so it's not from the future. Biggrin

Yeah here at ft desoto/north beach the period is pretty short. It's doable for novices like me but those videos you posted show the huge flat spots between the swells.

The short period chop in the bay, which depends on tidal current direction, can also be a pain in certain wind directions. I'll take what I can get though.

I subscribe to the maxim: “The grass is greener right in my face”.

A couple awesome things about riding on LL:
- get to sail with just some good locals
- never have to fight for waves or deal with attitude
- expect nothing and be pleasantly surprised
- lake swell is fast and short but on the right day it’s out there and it’s real!
- fresh water, no sharks
- easy access means more time on the water which means more experience

Stoked to be sailing LL

Read your post this afternoon while waiting for the rain to stop. The air temp was 40 degrees warmer than Gainesville.

An hour after that, hit a sand bar full tilt on the foil. "Ya know, that BoardMaverick fellow made some good points." Lol

It's even colder today, and I think Barrett's organizing a group ride 😏 🤣
