One of the great annoyances of flying with any type of sporting gear is the extra baggage fees. It's even become a standard question asked on the windsurfing.tv podcasts. Every sport it seems is subject to it except golf. Golfers get their gear checked in free or low cost with usually very little consideration for weight.
Here's a clever work around - make your gear bag look like a golf bag. https://www.adventurekiteboarding.com/2022-mystic-golf-bag-pro-kiteboarding-deceiver-bag-150cm-10-1-lbs/

Fortunately, Delta has eliminated the extra fee for kiting and even windsurfing gear but limited to 50lbs and 115 linear inches. Great for kiters, but not sure what windsurfing gear fits in a golf bag. Always funny seeing the "golf bags" going in to Bonaire, an island with no golf course....

Please post photos of your repairs. Maybe a couple of golf club shafts for splines
Seems like an easy fix for a guy who is skilled at doing nose jobs on windsurf boards (e.g. Webguy.) Just throw away the front half and round off the back half. Ends up like the little Wiz (103?) from a few years ago.
What happens in a black hole stays in a black hole.
Delta has bigger allowances for weight and total length of musical instruments. Once upon a time I carried some sizable items using a long keyboard/audio mixer ATA type case. I did put a small kids keyboard in there and a harmonica in case anyone asked.
