Who's the Blue Guy?

Blue guy
How did we ever get to the point where we considered a 6.5 day in late April an "off day"? Since Sunday, we've had three straight days where a 4.5-5.0 sail worked for a good portion of the day. Did anyone pick up an odd piece of tarnished bronze? Did you try to polish it up for a shine? Did anyone ask you the three things you really wanted from life?

The forecast doesn't look too bad for the next several days, either. Seems like there's a decent chance to get your board planing without resorting to rigging a 12.5. For those of you who are new to these parts, this is unusual. In fact, typically, we resort to sacrificing a goat for the opportunity to plane with anything under a 7.5 while wearing a shorty.

That get's my goat

"Really, windsurfing is THAT important to you? Are you kiddddding me?

Coo-ba

Back in the 1930's, my father lived in Havana for about two years as part of his migration from Greece to the United States. He didn't talk much about it except to call it Coo-ba, not Cue-ba, and tell me not to do drugs because he'd seen the sailors lying in a stupor in the opium dens and it wasn't a pretty sight.

Cuba has been off-limits to the US for over 50 years now because of the brilliant foreign policy of the United States. I'm not condoning Castro's rule, nor the corruption of Batista that led to that. Just that in the meantime, we've seen the Berlin Wall crumble, the Soviet empire shatter and the Arab Spring. Most of those changes were in some part assisted by Western cultural influences from MTV to Facebook and Twitter. But I digress.

Canadians and Europeans can visit Cuba and it's a fascinating place. Dimitris Savidis recently visited on a windsurfing trip and writes an extensive account of it. Not only does he talk about his visit but the historic reasons for the lack of decent windsurfing gear there - ie to inhibit someome from sailing a single tack to Key West. Highly recommended.
