Two more from Sailworks

While looking up videos about their foil sail came across a couple worth viewing

If you think windsurfers are gravitationally challenged, check out 1:38. Well, check out the whole damn video.

And what this crew does when it's light wind

Finally, a board that fits into a VW. This board was spotted being used by Balz Muller

Waiting to see the first foil tack. That will make racing absolutely wicked.

Saw the pic below on Aussie forums about board repair - then noticed the blue bits below it and shadows indicating they were connected.

Ulp.... at least someone said it was repairable. https://www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Windsurfing/General/Isonic-repair-materials--2?page=-2?src=rss#2165751

Quite repairable I would think, though not easy. It would be hard to match the colors, etc. Boardlady fixed boards broken in half - she could do this in her sleep.

At first I thought it was the mount for the foil that was broken, but on closer look it seems it is just the nose. The nose is not really that important and not subject to high stresses (usually - how they managed to do this is a mystery though.)

It said: "Don't push this button". He pushed it anyway.

(Real cause - tuttle box refit failure. You can see the foil poking through the board. Ouch.)

That same link posts this video showing a guy using a foil-SUP to fly. Pretty amazing. He must be a pretty strong paddler. I'm guessing us mere mortals couldn't do that. I recall (correctly I hope) back from my Aquaskipper days that you needed to get to about 6 mph to foil on it. I don't know if that holds true for windsurf or SUP foils, but it seems like it would be in the ball park. (If anyone wants to send me a GPX file from you Garmin GPS - I can probably give you a pretty good idea of the take off speed for a windsurf foil.) Anyway, SUP racers can hit top speeds of about 6 mph based on the winning times I've seen for a few race results I looked at. However this guys SUP is not a race SUP, so it is pretty impressive.

I saw that, too, Randy, but my post was already long enough and probably beyond boring. Yeah, I think those big surf foils take off in about 6. It probably takes about 8 to lift off on my big Horue foil so the idea of getting a cheap, big foil keeps tempting me. I'm hoping CV uploads my take off from Saturday.

I saw this video below the other day and it seemed like a pointless exercise in flat water - but catching a wave seems worthwhile. After seeing the video you were talking about, I really want to get a foil SUP and do a big downwind some windy day on Lanier.

Let's just say - this isn't for me.

Yeah - while I would like to try that, I'm pretty well convinced that it would not result in achieving escape velocity.

I don't think trying a downwinder at the lake would really accomplish much (absent assistance from a sail or kite). Naturally, the guy in the video could probably make it work. I gather from my reading that it is the waves produced by the wind as much as the wind itself that produces the epic downwinders SUP guys can do. From what I can tell, it is mainly an activity for an ocean or very large body of water.

Just noticed the "chicken straps" for the JP Foil 155. Pretty far back...

I suppose it is a perspective or camera angle issue in the picture, but I am not seeing what you are saying. It appears that the chicken straps also are almost on the tail on the Starboard as well.

I edited my comment after you posted and realized that it would be confusing. Yeah, the last generation of Starboard formula boards have the chicken strap at the back and a shape very specific for pressuring the fin. Earlier boards weren't so much. But still, the two sets of straps are pretty much inline unlike the foil board. Formula boards finally got very tweaky in how they sailed (as if they weren't enough). Reposting starboard to show what Randy is referring to.

Re: Two more from Sailworks

I recall getting really overpowered on my Hypersonic (and maybe some of the formulaesque wide boards I had) and I would put the back foot into the back strap on the opposite rail to keep the board from flipping over.. Made it ridable at least. Looks like these chicken straps will kind of do what I was trying for.

Found the original thread. Yes, a foil was involved.

But at 20kts board speed, there was a slight 'elevation issue' With a somewhat problematic result!!!

5.5 on Windfoil vs 9.5 RS:X winds about 15 mph

Re: Two more from Sailworks

Which was which?

I used the Google translate Japanese English to find out. Here's what it came up with:

I challenged with RS: X 9.5 with foil + 5.5 sails. Sea surface flat, wind is offshore 7 m / s, foil is Horue Vini LW, sail size 9.5 vs 5.5, board is heavy RS: X vs floating foil. Please take a look for a while. (^ ^)

So apparently the guy chasing is on the foil.

The guy with the wake is the RS:X. The guy whose board is quiet and has a small sail is on the foil. Biggrin
