Fields Landing Park on Lake Allatoona. Great for SW, probably good for S as well.
Not really new, because I'd been told about it by some long time windsurfers here, but new to me. Gainsville wasn't reporting anything, while McCollum was saying 14-25 mph, so I headed over. It was a great find - sailed 5.75 for 2 hours - very nicely powered. Unlike most Allatoona spots, the wind was pretty smooth (4 mile fetch) and really solid. Much more chop than normal for Allatoona, but wasn't a probelem. Nice rigging area. Plastic Restrooms (well nothings perfect) and virtually no one there. Looks like this might be a really good spot during the warmer weather months when the rest of the lake is crowded.
Directions: Take 575 N to Highway 20 exit. Go west on highway 20 (Knox Bridge Highway) about 5-10 minutes, look for the sign to Field Landing Park. The boat ramp is about a mile south of the Highway 20. It looks like the boat ramp is open all the time, currently not manned, but apparently will be later in the year.
If you go a little farther, you can come to Sweet Water, a COE campground and day use area, which launches a little to the south, and on the west side. Only problem with Sweet Water, is that the Day use area is not open till May 7.

Randy, nice work! I've been to Sweetwater, but this sounds good. Please let me know next time you go! I can go tomorrow, the 14th if we have wind...

Mimi,
Fields Landing (at least yesterday) on a SW was like Galts on an easterly. In fact, really the best time I can recall on a SW, since SW's are always flaky anywhere else I've been I'll let you know next time I'm going.
Thursday looks like a good easterly. I was figuring on heading up to Tidwell, or Vann's Tavern in the AM, however, as opposed to Galts. I might end up at Galts depending on whether how the wind breaks out at each spot. I'll try to post if I go to Galts, or call.
BTW - does anyone know if they re-opened the park at Galts? Last time we were out they had closed it for high water.

Yes the beach was open last Sunday, stickers didn't come in yet...
As you suggested, I may head out to Galts. I'll see what you decide.

FYI: Sweet Water is my choice in summer because of the reduced boat and PWC traffic. Since it is out of the way, fewer people go there. Its a few more minutes in the car but well worth it to be out in the middle of the lake and not getting circled by PWC.
Hey,
I called the COE Allatoona project office yesterday. The lady I spoke with said the season passes will be available this Thursday (tomorrow). Plan on bringing $30.00 cash with you as there are only a few places that will take credit cards and Galts isnt' one of then.
I'll be out of town tomorrow through this weekend so consider this my sacrafice to the wind gods. Maybe somebody can perform a ceramony with the Wind Alter too. I wonder where it is?

Thanks for the update Bill. Randy, I decided not to go sailing until after Tuesday next week. Francisco and I are playing in a recital on that evening (19th) in Buckhead and I don't want to mess up my hands till afterwards.

Thinking of going myself, but unsure where to go - considerable disagreement in the models. Some show wind through the day, albeit with a midday lull (slight), but of course the best policy is to go early, which is counter to my nature (and to stay late, which isn't). Who might be going to Vann 's, VP, or Gaults?
can't go this am, but may try Galt's this afternoon if the wind is still on
