New Days-Sailed Record for Nags Head

This is Day Twelve of our two-week stay in Nags Head. We've sailed every day up to now with fabulous conditions. Week one the water temperature was 80ºF with Southwest wind, then we had a couple of cold fronts bringing North wind and temperatures in the 60's with a return to warm conditions.

Fall winds tend to be lighter than in the Spring and we're only in Nags Head for two weeks in the Fall, so twelve days sailing would be a new record for this time of year.

This morning, when I first started posting this report, I looked out the window and was surprised to see whitecaps, despite a forecast of no wind. The direction was from the East, offshore, not a good direction, but Phil & I went out to make it an even dozen days that we've sailed in a row. I briefly got on a plane before the wind dropped. Rather than head back by tacking upwind, we decided to circumnavigate Nags Head Island. By sailing around the Island, we returned cross wind, but had to clear a shallow sand bar to do so. Flipping our boards around, we successfully sailed fin-first, clearing the sand bar. Seabirds love resting on this bar at low tide, and we got a close look at the beautiful birds as we sailed by. Even though the wind was barely enough to plane, we had a new sailing adventure. So a dozen days in a row is a new sailing record for the Fall.

We’re in Avon this week, and it has certainly been a great week, probably the best I have had to in Fall - 7.0, 4.2/3.7, 4.2/5.0, 5.8 and 7.0 days.

One thing that I have come to accept though is that Hatteras just ain’t consistently windy in Fall. We have had years of only 1 or 2 days of sailing in a week. Not complaining though!

So Barrett, are you going to become a member of the Atlanta Foilboarding Club?

The membership committee is examining his application. Unfortunately some troubling issues have come up in his background check. Specifically, his association with this guy:
