Re: Naish Foils 2018

So winds reported this afternoon in the 7-11 range (even a few gusts). Lots of 9s and 10's in the 5 minute observations. Anybody get foiled today?

It ain't Robby's foil, but for $125 you can get a kit. As I recall there was another kit out there some time ago, but this one has the parts all shaped so it seems as though you only have to put on the glass laminate and put it all together. Not easy, but I always thought the shaping part was the really difficult part of this. This is a kite/wake board kit though. Plenty of videos showing how to build it.

It's short for windsurfing but intriguing - maybe combine it with the powerbox adapter kit. I was skeptical but it looks like the guy has put some work into it. Build a pair and put them on a longboard!

A long mast is good for windsurfing. For the first couple of times you are thinking that a short mast would be better since you don't fall as far but then you find out that it's really important to keep the wing under water and it's a lot easier with a long mast.

Is the only issue for windsurfing the short mast, or does it also need a bigger wing? What about the angle of attack - does that change between wake/kite/ws?

The long Clearwater foil on his website looks spiffy. Anybody contact him? Link to build/finish videos?

My Horue lightwind wing is 80cm wide. I think Chris's is about the same (80-90). LP's lightwind wing is 940 sq. cm. Bigger wings mean easier take off but hit the speed limit around 18-20 depending on how well they are designed and fabricated. I didn't see how big the kit wing is.

Angle of attack is a biggie and Chris and I have spent a fair amount of time lately talking about this. We've both played with from 0-4 degrees back wing vs front wing and, for those who aren't airplane familiar, the back wing is tilted down - the front edge is lower. For me, 3-4 degrees means it's easier to get out of the water, you don't need to pop the board as hard. In windier conditions when you are going fast, 0-2 is better as the higher board speed makes the front wing lift much more easily. At that point you are actually trying to push the nose down with higher angles. But, it also depends on how the board is trimmed out - where you are standing, mast base position and boom height. Chris has a very sensitive electronic level that we've used to measure stuff. I found a big difference in the last few weeks going from about 2 to 3.8 especially in light winds. Chris didn't find that much difference.

I suspect that around 2-3 degrees would be fine all around as I think that this foil is probably going to top out around 15-18. Maybe go to 4 if you want early lift off and don't think you'll be pushing the faster end of the envelope.

If you make it so that the wing is parallel to the board bottom or slightly inclined, even if you don't lift off, I'd think you'd plane faster like the Virus fin so it might be worthwhile with the shorter wing. It's just that when you do fly, if you hear that gurgle of the wing near the surface, watch out.

Writing all this makes me sad that there aren't any dots on the horizon. I really want to go again.

Can you get your carbon guys to wrap one and put on a box?

He seems to have a lot of videos on how to build. This just part 1 - wing.

I'd be tempted to try it, but I don't have suitable ws board any more. Not that those are hard to find. Fabricating the mount might be a challenge though. And - to make matter worse we are in the midst of what looks like an exceptional dot drought in the days ahead. I did see that there is a lot of wind happening at that long skinny sandbar out in the Atlantic.

Dave D. watch this:

Randy, if I used the kit, I'd have to make two of them because the first would suck. The Pryde foil at under $800 doesn't like quite so awful unless I was dying for a project of which I have enough already. But, someone here needs to do this. I'm reminded of when Windsurfing mag had an article on how to build a board from insulation foam - good in theory but I never saw anyone actually do this (technically it's sound, just a PITA). But, again, someone here should do this so I can feel bad having bought one for 3-4X as much

I did one of those. It has sailed the rafters of my attic for about 15-20 years now. I have thought it wrapping it up and bringing it to the white elephant gift exchange, except no one is stupid enough to take home a board any more. Come by some time and you can have a look at it. It was actually a great investment of time and money. Every time I think about some hair brained construction project I look at it and it quickly convinces me to forget about it. I might go take a look at it before deciding to order the foil kit.

Good video, thanks! Hopefully our Airchair experience will help, it's nice to be able to practice it without having to wait on the wind! On the Cabrinha, I like the dual purpose board and the low aspect wing should be easier to learn. At my age, I think I’d rather have stability over speed. Also got some good reviews from people that had tried it and the final trigger was finding it on sale for 20% off from XL Kites down in Fort Walton.

Where did you get the carbon? Does it cost a lot more that glass?

E-Glass ranges $2-11 per yard, carbon cloth ranges from $20-60 per yard.
I've bought carbon and glass cloth and other stuff from these guys before. http://www.fiberglasssupply.com/

Avoid the high cost of carbon fibers, make your own: http://pslc.ws/macrog/carfsyn.htm

(Seriously, you really can't. It's like refining your own gasoline.)

For a really bulletproof wing go with Kevlar. Standing up on top of the water like that, you make a pretty easy (and probably tempting) target.
