More proof

that windsurfers are cheap sh*ts.

$7000 bicycle wheels. No, not bicycle, just the wheels. No tires, cassettes, etc, Just.The.Wheels.

To be fair, 99.999% of cyclists think this is nuts, too.

Re: More proof

Far as I know, windsurfing doesn't have any $7,000 boards or sails out there, but it is fairly expensive to buy new gear.

Buying all new stuff (prices based on a glance at Isthmus) for mid to lower end (but not the lowest end) gear would pass $5,000 for a complete windsurf set of a board, 3 sails, 3 masts.

Board 1500 (range 800-3000+)
3 sails 1800
3 masts 900 (range 250 each to 800)
1 boom 250 (range 80 to 1100)
extension 100
base 75
Wetsuit 300
booties 75
Uphaul 15
Harness lines 50
Harness 100

Total $5,165

Of course, there is used gear out there that can be had for pennies on the dollar, so cost of new stuff is almost irrelevant to anyone except those with the resources to buy all new stuff. The problem, of course, is putting all of the needed stuff together and getting a good mix of the right stuff.

Well, someone had some time on their hands today. Biggrin
Only quibbles would be a carbon boom around $700 for your list and you included wetsuit and harness. Cycling clothing can be another eye-watering experience.

Pinarello Dogma F10 frameset (just the frame) as raced by TdF champ Chris Froome: $5950. Add top level parts and wheels and it's another $5k.

You would be shocked how many of these are rolling around. Probably why Neil Pryde got into the bike business. http://www.neilprydebikes.com/
(admittedly, you can get one of their "road racing" bikes with a high level mechanical shifting group for about $4k)

Meanwhile, I ride my dumpster-dive bikes and windsurfers. I hope next year to upgrade to an early 90s Bic or F2 for the understated graphics.

Re: More proof

I think you could sell any of those on Craig's List for $1000 or more.

Another cycling expense - PED's. Windsurfers don't use them because there isn't as much money in the sport as riding a bicycle.

Pfft... I'm not giving anything away cheap. I paid $900 for mine and I figure it's at least doubled, since. "They don't make them like they used to.™"

btw, a significant number of the cyclists busted for PEDs are actually amateurs and usually Masters i.e. older guys racing for their ego's sake, alone.

Pryde admits their bikes cheat, too. "Wind cheating design" The only way I cheat the wind is to lay off the beans. Shok

Meanwhile, over on CL, someone is threatening to put all the local dealers out of business

Windsurfer. Fun on Lake Lanier, etc or the Ocean. Great Sport. Why rent when you can own it!! REDUCED!!!! Call show contact info Reduced!!! 12 foot long white board!! Will consider all offers. https://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/spo/6075805946.html

And there is a NOS Pryde sail "never been used" for $90. I think Neil made it as a jr. high school project.

Re: More proof

I think the PED's used by older cyclists are the kind that suggest you to contact your doctor if your "performance" lasts longer than 4 hours.
