The storm surge also created a new inlet at Mirlo Beach, but it was filled in with sandbags and sand, and Highway 12 repaved over the fill.

New inlet spanned by 600 ft steel bridge. The shallow ends of the inlet were filled in with sand held by steel
retaining walls.

Mirlo Beach is named after a famous rescue by the Chicamacomico Life Station in Rodanthe during World War I. Lifesavers rowed through burning fuel oil to rescue crewman from the torpedoed ship, Mirlo.
