X-TREME sailing conditions - Greece

[vimeo]117064429[/vimeo]

No, I did not sail!
These are conditions only for brave kids. For my sailing, I look for at least 20degC, not snow covered mountain background...

So, was the air temperature 6-9C?

What was the water temperature?

Normal winter sailing here is 5-12C and the water about 10c.

But, the windiest days are maybe once a year or even a couple of years (-> 40 knots).

At 1:48, you can see how windy it is when the rig gets blown out of the windsurfer's hands. It's like it was tied to a truck going by on a highway.

Thanks for posting.

No idea about water temp, but I doubt it is as low as 10C.
The same day, you have to check the conditions @ Cavo d'Oro, SE cape of Evia, not that far from the place the video was recorded.
See the map and the meteo statistics photo - wind reached 127km/h and air temp -2.2C

We can't legally drive as fast as that peak gust (127 kph = 78 mph). Excuse me for being an idiot but how unusual is this? We have big trees here. When we have that much wind, it looks like a war zone with trees down everywhere.

And since every one asked (actually no one did but, hey, this is about ME) - my Mom's family is from Kimi (well, technically Kalimeriani which is just up the road), circled in yellow. My dad was born in the mountains off to the left.

My uncle visited where his parents were from right after WWII (1945) and that's a story in itself. Recently, he sent around a picture he took of his grandmother on that trip.

The photo light was taken at night. The light needed for the photo was the moonlight shining through a small window on the landing between the first and second floors. The village had no electricity at the time.

:

Life was pretty hard back then.
Now, back to windsurfing...

Cavo D'Oro is notorious for hard sailing conditions. I do not have data on how often the place gets to 10Bft..
Nice picture of grandmother ΑΡΕΤΗ meaning Goodness, virtue.
There is a very nice site with chopper-view videos of almost all Greek coast line.http://www.tripinview.com/#/presentation/4990/?video=37106
You may enjoy the splendid beaches of the area starting from Kokkinoekklisie (red churches), all the way up past Kymi. There are also still pictures, while by increasing magnification of the map on the left, in addition to following the chopper's path, you may see the names of smaller places like Kalimeriani!
