PSA: Lightning

If you see it - no matter how far away, it's close enough to get out of the water.

I learned my lesson the almost hard way. Don't be like me, or worse, this poor lady:

Yesterday when I was trying to get back in in almost no wind I thought I heard thunder a few times. Looking at the sky - I couldn't see anything in the sky that looked threatening at all. Another time I was at Keith Bridge with Al, similar type non-threatening type day and we both heard something that sounded like thunder several times. Since Old Fed and KB are not all that far away, I was wondering if anyone else has heard anything similar in that area and might know what it is, since I don't think it is thunder.

Randy,
Was it possible that you were at the edge of something hidden behind trees or hill, etc?

fwiw, yesterday at Galts, we heard thunder and the rain came 20 minutes later. The thunder had absolutely no effect on anyone at the park. No one paused, did anything differently, etc. Darwin can be pretty savage sometimes. Shok

Re: PSA: Lightning

I suppose it could have. One theory I had was that big trucks rolling over Brown's Bridge create a sound that from a distance sounds like thunder. Or it could just be a Skyquake.

Well, if sharks weren't and thunderstorms weren't a serious enough threat, we now have to watch out for amoeba's:

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/jun/25/brain-eating-amoeba-north-carolina-waterpark-closes

"State health officials noted that the amoeba is common in warm lakes, rivers and springs in summer, and said in a statement that it does not cause illness if swallowed, but can be fatal if forced up the nose."
