Thanks for the info.
I think that there might be a few minor differences between the "Team AWOL" trip and ours. Rather than sleeping outside, looking for water and eating what we had in our saddlebags, we'll be staying at the Furnace Creek Inn and eating here:

When are you going? Looks like an amazing winter escape! The night sky must be spectacular! Too dry to windsurf, but Mtn Biking & pool sounds nice.

Looking forward to your pics.

I remember your "Snackwoods" comment so figured that schlepping around 4 gallons of water on your bike plus gear probably wasn't your plan. Just a bit envious of your trip and the articles were my way of living vicariously.
