No wind in 7 days- your story

After a breezy spring, no wind for 7 days. Let's hear your story. Getting more yard work done? cleaning out the smelly neoprene from your car? Clicking the forecast every couple of hours in desperate hopes things change? Rediscovering your family (oh, you're Betsy, my second daughter?).

Personally, I've piled on more miles on my bike in the last week than in the last 2 months.

7 days without wind makes one weak Wacko

Debi & I travelled to central Kentucky to visit some of her family (beautiful place near Abe Lincoln's old crib). On the way home we stopped at one of my old haunts to watch some flying. It's almost all para gliders now instead of hang gliders– "The Dark Side" just like kiting vs windsurfing. Interesting that the PGs have a better sink rate than HGs making soaring possible in lighter lift– kind of in the same way that kites are working in lighter wind than WSers. Ozone seems to be the go-to PG maker, but not sure if it's the same Ozone that the kite racer kids are jumping on now.

Hmmm, I had 2 days on 4.0 and one on 3.5 this weekend at Dougs....salt on wound.
Have been trying the forward loop the last few days, but so far I'm just getting smacked on the water and bruised on my back.

No wind sucks but I can tell you one thing I'm not going to do: play golf in Florida

I read the the Hooch gater was captured and they found a new home for him. Seems like this was a fitting place to put him, since Florida is always trying to steal our water, perhaps they should take some of what comes with it.

As for me, I went to Indiana to visit family and see the 500. There was wind there, at least on Saturday. 15-25 SW and very smooth, but I didn't do any sailing.

Packing for Bonaire, leaving Sat. forecast looks like 24/7 wind: https://www.windfinder.com/forecast/bonaire_atlantis

1. Atlantis Beach: side-off conditions (see position of boats).
2. Our Instructor, same Ozone foilboy!
3. Did I mention how much salt the island produces? (windsurfing bay in background)

I think we have a winner! Shok
Where is Atlantis Beach?
Does Lac Bay get deep enough (~5') for my foil?

Thanks, that was a lovely way to spend a few minutes. But I was disappointed that you seemed to be one of the few guys who lacked a moustache. Magnum P.I. would have been disappointed in you. Biggrin

Atlantis Beach is the kitesurfing launch on the SW side of Bonaire. It faces the ocean.

Lac Bay is on the opposite side of the Island and is protected from waves by a shallow coral reef with a deep, narrow channel that opens to the ocean. Lac Bay has a shallow section and a deeper section. The shallow, sand-bottom area of the Bay is knee to waist deep and drops off to a larger area that is 10-15 feet deep. Lac Bay is fringed by mangroves where pink flamingoes feed, but a large part of the shoreline is sandy. The two on-the-water windsurfing rental shops are located along the sandy shoreline.

Let me know if you're interested in going early this summer before the hurricane season ramps up. Peggy loves windsurfing in Bonaire because it's sunny, has steady trade winds, and crystal-clear tropical water. Bonaire has friendly small-scale hotels without the high-rise structures that block the wind. It's also fabulous for snorkeling and diving.

The photo is of Peggy relaxing in front of the windsurfing rental shop. She liked having sails rigged and a WS caddy ready to carry her gear to the water.

Yep, Barrett, keep telling yourself that's why Peggy likes going there. It can't be for the "scenery". Wink

Chris - loved your slide show of hang gliding in the good-old-days. Great shots!!!

Web guy - Maybe Peggy has more interest in the beachside "scenery" than I recognized. There is Bonaire's Sorobon naturist colony next door to Jibe City.

So after 4 days of terrible weather at Hatteras (rain, no wind), day 5 brought terrible weather. At least it came with wind... Full day on a 3.3 sail!

B., I think you answered the wrong guy. If Peggy says that it's the shallow water that she likes, I'd go with that. (Dear god is this man fooling himself... ) ROFL

Nitroj. - you actually own a 3.3? Bold move that paid off. I think I've seen more full solar eclipses than chances to use anything smaller than my 3.7. I hope you bought whoever took that pic a drink of his/her choice. That must have been miserable.

Meanwhile - for Randy:

3.3's come in handy when trapped in Hatteras on Noreasters or left-over tropical storms (i.e. the only 2 times the sail has been used). One more hurricane and the $100 bucks I spent on the sail 10 years ago will finally make sense.

Re: No wind in 7 days- your story

Chris,

Awesome slide show!

As far as Bonaire is concerned, don't get your hopes up about Sorobon. They stopped being a naturist resort some time ago. You can try "retro" style clothing and let us know how it goes. Shok Also, the deep part of Lac Bay is small. On a low wind day, I watched someone with a huge formula board and huge fin planing in the deep part when no one else was moving; it took him a while to wade back through the shallows, but it looked like it was worth it. I don't think that Jibe City has any DT boards, but Bonaire Windsurf Place might.

Another option for foiling might be the Outer Banks. Real Water Sports is now offering kitefoiling lessons. So there must be places up there where it's deep enough.
