Re: shhhhh 9/05/15

Since the wind drought, I was excited to see the forecast on Thursday. However it appears today to have shifted to the 6th instead. At least that is what windmapper is showing. Please do post Saturday if anyone is going.

Could be Saturday, could be Sunday. Or never....but I'm still planning on getting up early tomorrow. Today was pretty lame, but it did exceed the forecasts I was looking at.

Enjoy, seeing the report at Gilmer make me regret not just going early. Too late for me now due to another commitment. I just hope tomorrow morning will be good.

I did a total squirrel and at the last minute decided to go to Galts where Randy, Micah and CP always go. Right, guys? Guys? Figured I'd rather drive 35 minutes to find no wind rather than 50. It was a pure lark. I figured if I got there and there's no wind, I wouldn't be too bent out of shape since I used to drive about that far 4-5 times a week when Jr and Princess played soccer nearby.

Was the only one there.

It blew.

Sorry to all the peeps who I should have told that I was going but it was a spur of the moment decision that, frankly, I didn't think would work.

btw, topic for future article: people who grill at these parks make me angry. After smelling their schtuff, I have to go buy grilled meat on the way home. It's not helping my waistline.

btw, no. 2, when did the TSA start manning the entrance booth? I had to swear on a stack of old Field and Stream magazines that I didn't have alchohol, pets, etc. Guy is looking in my van, sees it full of gear up to my ear (literally) and asks if I have anyone else in the car. Yeah, I know it's his job. I was disappointed I didn't get the full body cavity search, though. It's my cheap thrill.

Sorry I missed your call. Wow - sounds like Galts is winning again. Probably due to El Nino or something. Let me know when you want to go to Galts - I love the place. Esp. in the next few months when the water drops about 5-7 feet.

I went to MAP thinking I could fly a kite I've been working on if there wasn't much wind. As it turns out - that was the scenario from about 8:45 to 9:45, then it picked up and I sailed my Ancient Transition Board (ATB) and Late Last Century (LLC) 6.6, just because I was too lazy to pack more than one sail. Worked nicely enough for an hour, but I was underpowered, not that I care much. (I'd bring my Start and 8 meter if I was really caring a lot about planing.) I did however plane some and railed my ATB-LLC combo quite a bit. People in the last century did have pretty good gear for light wind and lazy sailors. Not like modern times, but you know.....

The advertised rain never materialized, and wind dropped off like a normal easterly by 11, just as advertised. Did keep the boat pests away for a while, though. Hopefully the wind is better tomorrow and the sky looks worse. Nothing like the forecast of rain to free up the lakes for useful activities.

BTW - the extra presence this weekend also was happening at MAP. Guys driving around in golf carts with big t-shirts that said "STAFF" on them. Never seen that. I think its just labor day weekend - they may figure drunks will be out in force.

I was also pretty decided not to go, but got a good report at 10:00 and just went anyway - to Vann's. The problem I always have on easterlies aside from being the total opposite of an early riser is that by the time I determine that it might really blow a little, gather, drive, and rig, I almost always miss the best. I expect that may have been the case today, but with my O. Superlight and a thirty-something year old 7.0 I had a good day anyway. I really like that park. Gault's? I think I've been there twice in three years - for NW I do not love it, but easterlies can be very good, esp. if you like flat water.

Don't get me started on these guys! They insist that I launch from the boat ramp where there is no wind but yet allows people in 25' boats and Jet Skis to beach at our usual launch. Last couple times I have been the victim of threats via bullhorn coming from the shore.

Unfortunately, the "normal" people who think windsurfing is a waste of time (or haven't even heard of it) outnumber us by hundreds of thousands to one. So we have to play by their rules. Once the weather gets a little colder they will all vanish and we will take our place as the rightful rulers of the lakes and rivers in the metro area.

Randy - rules that obviously have no rationale need to be challenged.
