Info on housing in Hatteras

Can anyone suggest a house to rent and what area for a spring Hatteras trip? Taking the family.

Is the watter too shallow for the Hobie Cat? Rudder sticks down about 2-3 feet. I can recall one other time being there with the Hobie and the rudders kept getting kicked up.

Re: Info on housing in Hatteras

It could be too shallow in a lot of places. I did rent a Hobie once at WIndmill Point in Nags Head, but I don't recall exactly where the launch was. I've stayed at 3 different houses and it probably would have been too shallow at all 3, depending on the wind direction. You would probably have to put down anchor quite a ways offshore to launch when the wind is offshore. 2 feet is about 60 CM for fin, 3 feet is 90 cm. I don't know of anyone that ever uses a fin longer than 50 cm at OBX. William had to take his formula boards really far out to clear the fin in Salvo.

Can't you retract the rudders until you get out a way? If so, as long as the draft isn't too deep you would probably be ok. Once you get out far enough you would be ok, though there are some shallow spots that are in various places you might not expect. Hint - if you see a duck blind steer clear of it.

Avon. Island creek near Oceanaire. Deeper water', boat launch and other windsurfers. Windy well into mid June.

More later when I'm not on mobile.

I have sailed with a 52cm fin at Nags head (not too far from shore) with a sideshore wind, and probably could have gone deeper. Further south is probably better: Katherine was tracked last January entering the sound at Oregon Inlet and exiting at either Hatteras Inlet or Ocracoke Inlet. If a bus-sized object (Katherine was 14'2" 2 years ago) can submerge, you should have no problem with a 3 foot rudder. Biggrin

Re: Info on housing in Hatteras

We stayed at the Village at Nags Head last Thanksgiving. There is an area next to one of the piers from which you could launch. It is extremely shallow there, but others have done it:

We stayed at 113 W Soundbreeze Ln (WE12: Twilight At The Oasis). It was a short walk to the pier, but we drove down and rigged on the beach. The house was luxurious, and they installed a hot tub while we were there. I would definitely go back. (More importantly, so would my wife). The house Barrett rents (B20) is more convenient for windsurfing, but it wasn't available at the time. I don't remember seeing any hobie cats like the ones in the picture, but I wasn't looking for them.
Someone at the Triangle Boardsailing Club posted a selection of charts from charts.noaa.gov. The Nags head chart is 12205. Avon is covered by 11555.

Re: Info on housing in Hatteras

About five year ago we moved our spring and fall windsurfing trips to Nags Head from the area around Waves & Rodanthe. One of the main reasons:
Waist-deep instead of knee-deep water on the sound side. When we had houses in the area around Waves, Salvo & Rodanthe, we always complained when a nor'easter blew out the water. Then we had to carry our gear a couple hundred yards to reach water. The Sound in that area is gradually getting shallower near shore as the island migrates inland. In Nags Head, where we now sail, the water is deep enough to launch with offshore wind at low tide.

The water depth does vary on the sound side in Nags Head, from deep enough to launch directly from shore to shallow. Call me for more details. Windmill Point public launch has a new name and is improved. It's next to Kitty Hawk Water Sports.

Hey Barrett - you might want to check your dates again. I started going to OBX in 2005 - and was at the Nags Head house with you and Peggy, Ron and others. It seems that you had been in Nags Head for a while at that time, but I don't know for sure. In any case you have been there for at least 10 years. I think what you say is true regarding water depth - does seem deeper at Nags Head than in Salvo. Both case require you to get a ways out, though I'm sure Nags Head is less. Also Windmill Pt. is where I rented the Hobie so that launch seems like it would be fine.

Thanks for all the help here.

Now how do you figure out exactly which house to rent? Do you have a rental company, VRBO.com or do you just know where the houses are? Looks like Nags Head should be the place.

The Hobie Cat will be fine in waist deep water.

Barrett's house is really nice - check with him on the address. We also had another house before (406 Sunset Greens Lane in Nags on the golf course) that in the same development a few years before, which is also a great house. I think the realty company was Island reality but check that too. Both are really good locations for windsurfing.

For the Village at Nags Head, most of the rentals are through Village Realty:
http://www.villagerealtyobx.com/
there is also Resort Realty:
http://www.resortrealty.com/rentals/nags-head/views-for-you/5645/
(this house is a couple of houses down from the one Barrett rents)
Village Realty has a wider selection for that development.

Yeah - I think it was probably Village Realty.
