Oh, that wacky Lake Lanier.

Go out rigged on 8.0. Instantly wish I'd rigged the 9.4. Ten minutes later, wished I'd rigged the 6.3 (Gilmer reported gusts to 30). After rigging the 6.3, wished I'd stayed out on the 8.0.

Barrett, Chris P, Jim C. and Soctt S. (peelskid's spelling, don't blame me) all showed up. Dave DeL was thinking of kiting but a bit too up and down for solo work. John stopped by to say hello after sailing a Laser II. He promised to bring his board next time.

Correction: Gilmer reported gusts to 35.

Everybody (else) seemed to have fun.

William,
Thanks I feel better about today now. I was trying to get out and appointments / obligations kept on getting in the way. At least now I know I would have been miserable...I have a short fuse with 5-30 winds.
On the positive side I went out on my J24 sailboat yesterday evening and had a great time, and I saved 15% on Geico.

Nice 6.5 day at Galts. Micah and Dr. Ed (I think) were there also. Bill H.

Really nice evening. I sailed from 5:45pm till near sunset and by that time it was intervals of gust and calm. The great weather made up for the wind variability. Tried to push that big start onto plane but couldn't get there. Water clarity is great right now too.

Randy had his Start ripping in Hatteras. btw, what fin are you using? (I'm sure I've already asked 100 times)

I have a 42cm fin. I have the largest Start made...somewhere in the neighborhood of 135cm wide...I think. It is larger than Randy's Start. I might need some more horsepower in the form of a bigger sail Smile

As others have noted, there was a lot of variability in conditions, but I had a fun session - mostly powered on 5.7, sometimes way powered. I'm easing back in after a recent injury. Looks like we could have more wind on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday?

I went riding in N. Ga. yesterday and thought I missed another sail day. After riding at about 4:30 I called Gilmer and heard 11 gusting to 30 and I just new conditions were weird.

One day we will get my kind of winds. 20 - 25 steady with hardly a gust and add in a nice warm sunny day/ Mail 1

Is the 42 one of the Drake wide fins? The wide Drakes are okay but as you gain skill, iirc, you can't really push too much on them like an equivalent area longer fin. It's been a while so I could be completely wrong on this. It's a good fin for it's purpose which is to provide a lot of lift at slower speeds without being annoyingly long for a beginner who's more likely to come close to shore.

As you increase sail size, you definitely can increase fin. I don't know how wide the tail of your Start (which more determines fin size because of how much leverage you can exert on the fin) is but Randy's and my Starts (1st gen) easily carry a 65cm with a 7.5 or bigger.

Side note (if you aren't already doing this): When learning, there's a tendency to put both feet on the rails when trying to plane in lighter winds. This digs in the windward rail making it difficult for the board to plane and it will constantly want to carve up into the wind. Place the back foot more inboard and press down with the ball rather than the heel to keep the board flat. Once you begin to accelerate, bring the sail back over the fin and back foot just in front of the back strap. When you are fully powered and after the front foot is in the strap, you can put the back one in.

Overall, I didn't mind the lighter winds. It allowed me to start working on some basic jibes.

It is a Bic Core deep tuttle...made for the one design board. Not sure where it falls in the wideness range.

Original Start Drake "wide" 40cm
Starboard Free ride 40 cm
Starboard Formula 65cm
